ATX Photography Internship

For my internship, I went to Austin Texas to intern with Kelsie Raney from Flower Girl Photography. During my time there, we worked on lighting, angles, poses, and many other things!

Jake

This was the first photo shoot that I did with my mentor. The concept was based on mirrors. It was very rainy and dark this day and so this was my first introduction to the settings on my camera. She taught me about ISO which is how much light is needed to get a good exposure. With these photos, we used a high ISO in order to shoot better quality photos in lower light. For this shoot, we also experimented with angles. I noticed myself often shooting head on and she taught me to play around with where you stand, getting really low and shooting up or standing on top of something and shooting down. This gives you more options when picking photos that you like and also makes you see something in a way that you may not have before.

Alexis

For this shoot, we played a bit with the backdrop for a more studio-esk look, but we mostly based on fabrics and lighting. We stayed inside for most of this shoot because again, it was overcast pretty much all day but we did manage to catch some sunlight in order to create the photos with the lace shadows casting on her face. For the studio photos, we used lights with umbrellas over them so we could soften the light and not cast as harsh of shadows.

Allison

For this shoot, we mainly focused on taking advantage of the location. The photoshoots before this one we were focusing solely on the model and props but for this one, we had the model play with the background, sit in the flowers, wave her dress around in the grass and use the sun peeking through objects in the background. This also required we play with light, most of the pictures we took were either in direct sunlight or in the background during sunset, I learned how to adjust the settings on my camera to cooperate with the intense light.

Emily

This shoot again was mainly based on the location but for this one, we also played a lot with weird, cool poses. The location was perfect for trying new poses because it was kind of a blank canvas. When people take photos in flowers, we noticed that all of them look kind of similar, people just sitting and smiling or standing so we wanted to branch out and have the model do some cool things with her hands and play with the flowers.

Brittney

This shoot really had no rhyme or reason. We were just playing around with all of it, with lighting and posing and angles. The location of this photo shoot was at a greenhouse so we really had the opportunity to play with the leaves in front of her face and other nature in the background. This shoot was also interesting because the models brought one of her friends to model with her so I got to work a bit with two people, how to pose them together and how to change the settings to focus on both of them.

Cici

For this photoshoot I focused a lot on how I was editing them, for past shoots I would take the pictures then they needed minimal edits. These pictures were very blank feeling because of the lack of color in them. I bumped up the pink and green tones, put down the black so it wasn't as contrasted, added grain so it had a bit more of a vintage feel and a couple of other things to give them more life.

Behind the Scenes

This shoot was pretty last minute but we managed to pull it together very nicely. This shoot was kind of difficult for my mentor and I, and the model. We were in a small space and so we had to come up with some cool poses for her to do and then we had to figure out what the best angle was for each shot which took some climbing on counters and on the edge of the bathtub. I chose to edit these in black an white because I never use b&w and I thought it would be cool to play around with it a little bit.

This was an event Kelsie ran called Pawtraits for a Cause. She would charge people for her to take photos of their dogs in flower crowns in front of a backdrop, all of the money was then donated to a local shelter. The photo in the middle is me and all the girls who helped run the event.

This was mine and Kelsie's last day together, we did two photoshoots with two different models and ran through the pouring, flooding rain just to get some good photos. I had an awesome time in Austin and I owe it all to Kelsie, she taught me so many things I will never forget.
